Medical cannabis dispensary looks to open in Hoboken

Colorado company promises diverse hiring and community support

Another medical cannabis dispensary could be coming to downtown Hoboken, according to a recent announcement by the Colorado-based company Terrapin.

Minority-owned Terrapin plans to open a dispensary at 86 River St., one block away from the Harmony dispensary planned for 95 Hudson St., making it the second to seek a home near the city’s major transportation hub at the Lackawanna Terminal.

After nearly three years of outreach to the community, Terrapin will begin preparing paperwork to move through Hoboken’s zoning and or planning boards.

“As always, Terrapin is focused on planting local roots,” said Chris Woods, founder, owner, and CEO of Terrapin. “We are so thankful to our partners in the Hoboken community who have welcomed us with open arms. We are excited to serve these communities as responsible corporate actors in meeting the needs of cannabis patients, while also leaving a positive community footprint.”

According to Terrapin, the company has worked with nonprofits and organizations in northern New Jersey to create a social equity community impact plan, which includes diversity in the workforce as well as economic development.

Some of the organizations include Jersey City Based WomenRising, the Hudson Pride Center, Paterson based Oasis, A Haven for Women and Children, and Project Help. Terrapin works with these organizations to employ those they help, volunteer as mentors, and contribute financially.

“Terrapin recognizes that partnerships between the business and nonprofit sectors create synergies which benefit individuals and the larger community,” said Roseann Mazzeo, executive director of WomenRising.“Workforce development is critical to our mission of assisting women and their families to achieve self-sufficiency and live safe, productive, and fulfilling lives. We look forward to working with Terrapin in developing additional opportunities to support this mission.”

Promoting good labor relations

Terrapin has entered into a Labor Peace Agreement with United Food and Commercial Workers International Union to avoid labor disputes and to promote harmonious labor relations.

The company announced plans for a job fair with an emphasis on social equity and diversity as it moves to establish operations in Hoboken.

Terrapin will work with the Color of Cannabis, which provides technical business support, mentorship training, and partnerships for people of color and those negatively impacted by cannabis prohibition. it will oversee a social equity informational session and resume-building workshop for Terrapin in New Jersey.

The company has sought Hoboken partners like Joseph Castelo, who co-owns Antique Bar & Bakery and Antique Loft.

“It has been an honor and a pleasure to work with Chris Woods and his team at Terrapin,” Castelo said. “Terrapin’s culture aligns strongly with our commitment to serving the local community. We are thrilled to enter into a partnership to work with Terrapin to bring more opportunity and diversity to Hoboken’s workforce, while also offering access to patients who need medical cannabis. We look forward to a long relationship.”

Terrapin operates six dispensaries and four cultivation/processing facilities in Colorado. It operates a licensed grower/processor medical marijuana facility in Clinton County, Penn. and recently launched a medical cannabis grower facility in Grand Rapids, Mich.

“We have a proven track record that ensures that we will fit in with the fabric of this community,” Woods said. “The relationships we have developed with the community allow us to serve as a responsible partner who is invested in the future of Hoboken and North Jersey.”

Meanwhile, this November voters will decide the fate of recreational marijuana answering a ballot question on whether to amend the state constitution to permit those over the age of 21 to use marijuana.

If the question succeeds, New Jersey would become the 12th state to legalize recreational marijuana.
