The urban design competition that was launched in October has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Rethink Bayonne was cofounded by local residents, led by Rethink Urban Design CEO Paul Garcia, aiming to “democratize urban development” by bringing homeowners into the process.
Due to the recent spike in COVID-19 cases, the design competition will be postponed until Dec. 5.
“Unfortunately, the recent COVID spike has limited our abilities to film and host the event,” Nicholas Moosa, in charge of business development at Rethink Bayonne, said in a press release. “This along with some team members and partners contracting COVID has left us with no option other than to postpone the event until we could properly do what we need to for the Bayonne community.”
Since plans for an in-person event were derailed, the competition has teamed up with additional partners who will aid in ensuring the virtual stream of the contest goes smoothly. The event will be the same with a few adjustments due to the switch to a fully virtual event.
“We thank our supporters and participants for their understanding during this unprecedented time,” Moosa said. “Please continue to spread the word and look out for further updates.”
Residents can connect with Rethink Bayonne on Facebook for updates, and it will send an agenda for the event within the next week.
Timeline changes
The registration period for residents to enter the competition closes on Dec. 4. This is the first of three phases of the competition.
On that day, entrants are separated into teams. From Dec. 5 to 6, teams will work on innovative designs that will inspire residents to build.
Teams will be given architectural specifications and guidelines.
The design submission deadline is Feb. 20. The teams will present their designs to judges, locals, and anyone interested, using various online platforms.
The competition ends on Feb. 22, when judges determine the winners.
Entrants will compete for prizes and meet potential employers. Even if a design does not win, the competition will showcase it to potential buyers and help entrants monetize their designs.
Participants will meet with talented creators and network with investors, real estate professionals, builders, and home shoppers. This can lead to business partnerships beyond the event.
