According to the Bayonne Office of Emergency Management (OEM), as of Feb. 19, there were less than 300 active cases. Approximately 100 residents have died of the virus since the onset of the pandemic.
The number of hospitalizations is the same as the week before, as most residents recover at home. There were nine COVID-19 patients at Bayonne Medical Center as of Feb. 19. OEM does not have data on Bayonne residents in other hospitals.
Residents are encouraged to wear masks, social distance, and practice good hygiene.
A new testing site, probably drive-thru, will open at Veterans Stadium next week, according to OEM.
Coping with the snow
In his weekly COVID-19 video update, Mayor James Davis thanked residents for cooperating with the DPW, which has been working non-stop nearly all month.
“I know the weather hasn’t been cooperating with us this year, but as usual Bayonne people step up and deal with adversity,” Davis said.
During Winter Storm Orlena in early February, Bayonne got nearly 20 inches of snow. Following Winter Storm Viola on Feb. 18 and 19, a few more inches coated the already snow-packed city.
Davis said the city worked hard to plow as many streets as possible, removing snow from both sides of the street on Broadway and Ave. C within 72 hours. He hopes next week’s warmer weather will melt the snow.
Get tested
Residents with an appointment from their physicians can be tested inside their vehicles at the Emergency Room Driveway entrance to BMC every day from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
The RiteAid at 54th Street and Broadway offers free testing for all residents over 18 via drive-thru. Visit riteaid.com to register. Residents do not need to be symptomatic, nor do they need a prescription.

CityMD and BMC are conducting antibody testing. Residents can call 2-1-1 for a list of testing sites throughout the state.
The Bayonne Health Department is immediately notified of positive results and contacts individuals to begin contact tracing. The BHD advises residents who have recently taken a COVID-19 test to be sure to answer their phones for contact tracers and staff.
