Recently, we have received a lot of questions about garbage and recycling service in Bayonne. The City of Bayonne’s contracts for garbage and recycling with our previous hauling contractor ended on December 31, 2020. For the sake of public health, we needed to make temporary contracts for garbage and recycling pick-ups until it was possible to award longer-term contracts. Legal issues prevented us from doing anything other than stop-gap contracts at the moment.
On December 29, 2020, the City Council awarded short term emergency contacts for garbage and recycling. A + L received the contract to pick up regular garbage, and JSI received the contract to pick up recycling.
Both companies had to learn our local streets and the pick-up routes around the community. They also had to do this during a difficult winter season. The large amount of snow we have received in recent weeks has made it difficult for all of us. It is difficult for residents to figure out where to place our garbage and recycling, so that the workers will be able to see it around the mounds of snow.
The combination of two new hauling companies and the rough winter has not been easy for anyone.
There are some tips that may help residents deal with garbage and recycling.
To the extent that you can do so, please place garbage and recycling outside separately from each other. When they are all mixed in, each company’s workers may think that garbage is recycling or that recycling is garbage. As a result, each company could bypass your refuse, because they will assume that the items are the other company’s responsibility. If you use barrels for garbage only, it may be less confusing for the crews from the two companies.
When you set out cardboard and/or paper, please tie it up into a bundle, so that it will be easier to pick up. If you put paper or cardboard out in a loose pile, it could blow away or be bypassed by the crew.
When you set out cans and bottles, with the new hauler, you are allowed to place them in a clear plastic recycling bag. This makes it easier for the crews to pick them up. If your recycling is in a bag, please tie it firmly, so that everything stays inside the bag.
A little later in the year, we expect to award longer-term contracts for garbage and recycling. In the meantime, thank you for your patience.
