North Bergen Library reopens to the public

The lobby in Town Hall has also reopened

All branches of the North Bergen Free Public Library have been reopened to the public.

Patrons over the age of two are required to wear masks and keep them on, covering both the nose and the mouth, at all times. Library and computer usage is limited to one hour per day.

The branches are open Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The main library is open Sundays, 1 to 5 p.m.

While Town Hall remains closed to the public, the lobby has reopened to the public with commonly requested forms available for pickup. The lobby is accessed through the side entrance, next to the Municipal Chambers, and will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Municipal employees continue to conduct business online, by email, or phone. To meet with a township employee, residents can call from the lobby, and someone will come down to meet them. Masks and social distancing are mandatory.

Residents and property owners are encouraged to use the township’s website for general business. Go to the township directory for contact information.

Grant funding

The library has been selected as one of 16 public libraries nationwide to receive a $5,000 American Dream Literacy Initiative grant from the American Library Association and the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. With the funding, the library will provide laptops and internet WiFi hotpots to support its virtual ESL classes.

“This is a great opportunity to ensure that our virtual ESL offerings remain accessible to everyone and helps us bridge the technology and communication gap at multiple levels,” Library Director Sai Rao said. “We are grateful to the grant for giving us this opportunity.”

The library offers a variety of ESL programming, including Basic, Intermediate, and Conversational ESL and one-on-one Advanced classes and Citizenship instruction. Due to the pandemic, ESL classes are currently virtual which presents a fresh set of challenges to the library in ensuring that programs remain accessible to all residents.

The American Dream Literacy grant will allow the library to lend reliable technology to class participants. The library is acquiring the new equipment and hopes to make it available to students within the next few months.
