A budget hearing will likely be held at the board's April meeting.

The tentative budget is for the 2021-2022 school year. At its March 16 meeting, the board adopted budget totaling $173,058,385. This year’s budget marks an increase of nearly $10,000,000 from the 2020-2021 budget.

Planning for the year ahead

The appropriations consist of $154,839,001 from the General Fund and $18,219,384 from Special Revenue.

The district is facing a drop in anticipated revenue by $84,387,081 from the General Fund and $18,219,384 from Special Revenue. As a result, the district is increasing the tax levy by one percent to cover the difference, totaling $70,451,920.

The tax levy increase will yield a $697,544 tax increase for property owners from last year’s budget. State aide will increase by approximately 18 percent.

Superintendent of Schools John Niesz and School Business Administrator Daniel Castles will establish the final budget for the school year. At the meeting, no members of the public commented on the tentative budget.

A hearing will likely take place at the next Board of Education meeting on April 27 at 5 p.m. Residents can attend in person at the Alexander X. O’Connor Auditorium at 669 Avenue A or watch online at the board’s YouTube channel. For more information, go to bboed.org.

The adopted final budget will head to the Executive County Superintendent. The district will need to provide the Certificate and Report of School Taxes for the school year to the City Clerk and Hudson County Board of Taxation by May 14.

The district looks to transition to hybrid instruction on May 3. For the 2021-2022 school year, it aims to return to completely in-person instruction.
