North Bergen graduates

North Bergen High School graduation will take place in two sessions on June 25 at Bruins Stadium in Braddock Park.

A-L, 10 a.m. (Rain date June 28, 10 a.m.)

M-Z and STEM, 1 p.m. (Rain date June 29, 10 a.m.)

New officers join JCPD

Seventeen new police officers, over 70 percent from minority populations, were recently sworn in, making this JCPD one of the largest in decades. The new recruits will increase police presence and walking patrols, community outreach, and crime deterrence.

Stevens serves up tennis courts

Fully vaccinated Hoboken residents over 18 can use four tennis courts at Stevens Institute of Technology through Aug. 22.

Access is between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., Friday through Sunday.

North Bergen reads

Children and teens may register for the Summer Reading Program, “Tails & Tales” from the Guttenberg Resource Center and North Bergen Free Public Library. Sign up, 2 to 4 p.m., June 24, Kennedy Branch Library, 2123 Kennedy Blvd.

Movies and music return to Hoboken

Movies Under the Stars will take place at 9 p.m. in June and July and 8 or 8:30 p.m. in August, at Pier A Park, Wednesdays until Aug. 18 with the exception of July 28 and Aug. 4 when the program will move to Seventh and Jackson Park for screenings of The Lion King and Onward.

Concerts will take place in Sinatra Park, the Southwest Resiliency Park, and Shipyard Park at 13th and Bernard McFeeley Shipyard Lane, at 6 p.m.

Man charged in sexual assault of Jersey City minor

Cecilio Viera-Viera, 21, of Freeport, New York, was arrested on June 16 on charges that he sexually assaulted a girl, 12, he allegedly met through social media.

According to the Hudson County Prosecutors Office, Viera-Viera allegedly lured the girl to meet him in person on June 4 in Jersey City, allegedly luring her into his vehicle and allegedly sexually assaulting her.

Anyone who wants to report a sex crime should call 201-915-1234.

The above charges are merely accusations. Viera-Viera is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Second Jersey City man charged in April murder

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office has charged Naseem Rourk, 20, of Jersey City in the death of Rodney Wallace, 21,who was shot in Jersey City on April 13.

On June 10, a male, 16, was also arrested and charged in Jersey City.

The above charges are merely accusations. Rourk is presumed innocent until proven guilty

Hudson County cops carry the torch

On June 11, officers from North Bergen, Guttenberg, West New York, Union City, and Jersey City participated in the Hudson County leg of the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run supporting the Special Olympics of New Jersey.

Jersey City man pleads guilty to aggravated manslaughter

Jersey City resident Victor Lopez, 54, pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree Aggravated Manslaughter in relation to the Feb. 24, 2019, shooting of Brandon Magwood, of Jersey City.

The State is recommending a sentence of 16 years in New Jersey State Prison.
