North Bergen to hold info session on TNR program

The first meeting with the public on the topic is set for July 27

North Bergen wants to inform residents on its trap, neuter, and release (TNR) program to cope with feral cat colonies in the township.

The Health Department invites residents to an informational session on their new TNR program for feral cats at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 27 at the North Bergen Vaccine and Resource Center. The meeting is likely the first of many regarding the program.

The informational event will cover the township’s new TNR program, which aims to trap, neuter, and release feral cats. Find out how to participate in the effort to care for local animals while improving residents’ quality of life at the info session.

The North Bergen Vaccine and Resource Center is located at 9243 Kennedy Boulevard. For more information, call 201-424-0178.

Long time coming

The program was begun following an ordinance adopted by Mayor Nicholas Sacco and the North Bergen Board of Commissioners in 2021. Township Administrator Janet Castro had been developing the program since March 2020, when she was still health officer.

In January of 2021, officials announced the plan has been on hold due to COVID. No staffing or resources were available because health department personnel were stretched thin, working to contain the virus.

Then the township commissioners took action to create the program in September of 2021. Now the program has finally come to fruition, and is looking for community input as of July of 2022.

The township will assess the results and details as the project moves forward. For now, it’s a one-year trial program funded by the township. Castro and North Bergen Health Officer will determine whether to continue the program.

The idea is to implement this pilot program and work on funding resources for a more permanent solution to the feral cat colonies.
