As the back to school season approaches, Amerigroup New Jersey is expanding its Read Across America Initiative in partnership with the Jersey City Free Public Library system. Through the introduction of the reading platform “Beanstack” along with the updated Amerigroup Video Library, students across the state will have access to an array of different learning tools and resources.
Reading, one of the most important foundational skills for all other learning, significantly impacts a child’s development. It improves language and comprehension, develops critical thinking skills, and prepares students for later success.
In order to promote and enhance summer reading, the library launched what it calls “Beanstack” an online platform and mobile app that allows students to track their summer reading, partake in different activities and challenges, and create a culture of reading in school and at home.
The Amerigroup Video Library will become apart of the “Beanstack” experience, as students will be able to access a collection of their favorite Back to School stories, virtually narrated by celebrity guest readers, many of whom have a connection to New Jersey, including Mayor Fulop, actress Brooke Shields, and NBA player Jason Thompson. These tapings can be found on Amerigroup New Jersey’s video library, or at the link below.
In addition, the Jersey City Free Public Library system will host a series of events, including weekly story times in which different narrations from the video library will be played aloud for students to read along with. A select activity will follow each book that is read, allowing students to work on their comprehension and interactive skills.
“The Jersey City Free Public Library is excited to deepen our partnership with Amerigroup,” said Mandy Decker, Outreach Coordinator. She continues, “Thanks to this partnership, over 100 Jersey City Public School classroom libraries received new books last year. This year, we’re ready to expand our reach by bringing together the Library’s Beanstack app and Amerigroup’s video library, in addition to giving residents full access to our resources and services, all free with a library card.”
Due to the impacts of COVID-19 on younger students, Amerigroup New Jersey created this initiative as an effort to connect everyone through the love of learning and reading.
