Stop Changing the Clocks!

Dear Editor:

Daylight Savings Time ends on November 6 at 2 a.m. Soon it will be time to turn our clocks again, to “fall back,” which means yet another year of turning the clocks back, and another four months of early sunsets.

Then again, when you think about it, gaining an extra hour during these challenging times would be like watching an extra episode of “Supertrain.” Talk about a train wreck! Of course, with the increased rate of inflation that we’re currently experiencing, the extra hour would be the only thing that some of us have managed to save all year.

Granted, if it weren’t for the “spring forward” and “fall back” annual ritual – changing the clocks – some of us would get no exercise at all. But, truthfully speaking, changing the clocks from Daylight Savings Time to Standard Time, and vice-versa, no longer means all that much anymore, except confusion for many people.

Changing the clocks is disruptive to our biological clocks. I cannot for the life of me figure out why we are still doing this. I understand why it was implemented at one time. But now, in the 21st century! Come on! We don’t burn candles anymore for illumination.

There is absolutely no reason for this “tradition” to continue. We should do away with the “changing of the clock” ritual since there is no logical explanation for continuing it.

Why not stay on one time – specifically, Daylight Savings Time since we use that time for eight months of the year – and quit all the switching around? Hawaii, Arizona (except the Navajo Nation), American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Northern Marina Islands don’t change the clocks. Why not make it the same for all?
