On Sunday morning, an American Airlines flight bound for Phoenix was forced to make an emergency landing back at its departure airport, John Glenn Columbus International Airport in Ohio, after a bird strike reportedly led to an engine fire.

The incident occurred just 30 minutes after takeoff, when the Boeing 737 commercial jet was flying over Upper Arlington, approximately five miles outside of Columbus.

No injuries were reported, and the plane touched down safely at the Ohio airport shortly after 8 a.m. local time. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has confirmed that they are investigating the occurrence.

A passenger on the flight, Ryan Brink, captured a video through the plane’s window, revealing sparks coming from the right engine. He shared the footage on Facebook, along with photos of the aircraft, which displayed what appeared to be blood spatters on one side.

In response to the incident, American Airlines did not elaborate on the cause of the emergency landing but attributed it to “a mechanical issue” in a statement. The airline assured that the aircraft had landed and taxied safely to the gate under its own power, adding that it had been taken out of service for maintenance.

Another Flight Canceled in North Carolina Due to Possible Engine Fire

The FAA is also investigating a separate incident involving another American Airlines flight. Last Thursday, Flight 2288 had to cancel its takeoff from Charlotte-Douglas International Airport in North Carolina after a possible engine fire was reported. 

The plane, which was scheduled to fly to Dallas-Fort Worth, was taken out of service for maintenance due to a mechanical issue, according to the airline.

These two incidents come at a time when American air travel has been facing increased scrutiny, with numerous runway close calls, mass flight delays, and thousands of cancellations causing frustration for both travelers and federal regulators.

Authorities apprehended Pedro Tello Rodriguez Jr., 25, in connection to the shooting. The Elgin Police Department arrested Rodriguez early Tuesday and released details of the arrest later that morning. 

Responding officers found two people in a vehicle who had been struck by bullets at the H-E-B supermarket parking lot just after midnight Tuesday.

One of the victims, Heather Roth, suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene, while the other cheerleader, Payton Washington, was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition. 

During a prayer vigil Tuesday night, Roth recounted the incident, explaining that she had opened the door to a vehicle she thought was hers, only to find a man sitting in the passenger seat.

As Roth attempted to apologize, the man got out of the car, threw his hands up, pulled out a gun, and began shooting at the cheerleaders. Washington, who was hit twice, suffered severe injuries, including a ruptured spleen, and damage to her pancreas and diaphragm. She is currently in stable condition and recovering in the ICU.

The cheerleaders, both from the Austin and Round Rock area, were part of a carpool traveling to a cheerleading gym in Oak Ridge North, a suburb of Houston.

The family of Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man who was severely beaten by Memphis police officers after a traffic stop in January, has filed a $500 million federal lawsuit against the city of Memphis, its police department, and the officers involved. 

The suit claims the officers were “unqualified, untrained, and unsupervised,” and the beating resulted in Nichols’ death three days later.

Modern-Day Lynch Mob

The lawsuit, filed by lawyers representing Nichols’ mother, RowVaughn Wells, compares the brutal beating to the 1955 killing of Emmett Till, saying Nichols suffered at the hands of a “modern-day lynch mob.” According to the suit, the reasons for Nichols’ traffic stop have “never been substantiated.” 

The officers involved allegedly dragged Nichols out of his car, subjected him to a violent “frenzy of force,” and acted like “a pack of wolves attempting to hunt down their wounded prey.”

Five police officers, all Black, were fired following an internal investigation and were indicted on criminal charges on January 26. Memphis Police spokesperson Maj. Karen Rudolph declined to comment on the ongoing litigation. CNN has sought comment from city officials and attorneys for the five officers charged criminally.

SCORPION Unit: Unqualified and Unsupervised

The five charged officers were part of the police department’s specialized SCORPION unit, created in 2021 to address the rise in violent crime in Memphis. The unit was permanently deactivated after video footage of Nichols’ arrest was released in January. 

The lawsuit claims that the fatal beating was not just the result of five rogue officers, but the “culmination of a Department-ordered and Department-tolerated rampage by the unqualified, untrained, and unsupervised SCORPION Unit.”

The city of Memphis allocated $1.25 million of its police budget for lawsuits in 2023, but experts say any resolution of the Nichols case would likely be significantly larger.

German artist Boris Eldagsen has refused to accept a prestigious photography award after revealing that his winning entry was created using artificial intelligence (AI). 

The image, titled “Pseudomnesia: The Electrician,” won the creative open category at the Sony World Photography Award, sparking a debate on the distinction between AI-generated images and traditional photography.

A Cheeky Monkey’s Experiment

Eldagsen admitted in a statement on his website that he submitted the AI-generated image as a “cheeky monkey” to test the competition and initiate a discussion about the future of photography. 

He emphasized that AI images and traditional photography should not compete with each other in awards, as they are different entities. “AI is not photography. Therefore I will not accept the award,” Eldagsen said.
